La Plaza held on National Bulldog Day
May 4, 2021
The annual La Plaza event at SHS was held on April 23, which also happened to be National Bulldog Day, and the day after Earth Day.
Counselor Nick Ridenoure said teachers worked to combine the events to make the day extra special.
“In the past we had two separate events for La Plaza & Earth Day. This year we combined the two celebrations with National Bulldog Day,” he said. “Today is very special. Due to the Coronavirus we haven’t been able to do anything like this all year.”
La Plaza is an annual event organized by the World Languages Department that features music, art, performance, and food from various cultures. It is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Typically held at the end of April in the courtyard, students can purchase their favorite foods from vendors and watch students perform dances and songs while wandering through various exhibits created by World Langauges students. After missing this event last year due to Covid-19 and school closures, students and teachers were determined to bring the event back better than ever.
This was the school’s first time to hold a celebration in recognition of National Bulldog Day. Teachers got together to plan the events, which included a photo booth, a visit from a real bulldog, and collaborations with TASC (Teen Action Support Center) and Crystal Bridges.
“People come to school for the connection they feel with their peers and teachers. I’m glad that we’re getting back to it,” he said.
The event was also paired with an arts integration project in which art, social studies, math, and science classes worked on projects that were displayed throughout the building.
